A United States border agent A man was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Vermont near the northern border, Fox News has confirmed.

The Department of Homeland Security said a Border Patrol agent was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Coventry, Vermont, on Monday at 3:15 p.m. The border between the United States and Canada.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamin Hoffman issued a statement saying, “The incident is being quickly investigated.”

“Today, January 20, a Border Patrol agent assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol's Swanton Sector was fatally shot in the line of duty. Every day, Border Patrol agents put themselves at risk so Americans and our nation can be safe,” Hoffman wrote.

Mexico and Canada need to secure their borders as much as we need to secure ours.

“My prayers and deepest condolences are with our management and the agent's family, loved ones, and colleagues. This incident is being rapidly investigated and DHS will release additional information as soon as it becomes available.”

During the traffic stop, two suspects were in the vehicle. Officials confirmed that one of the suspects had died.

A spokesman for the Albany FBI said they were investigating the incident and confirmed that the US Border Patrol agent was killed along with another person. The agency also said a third person was injured and is in custody.

“FBI personnel will work with our partners from the U.S. Border Patrol and Vermont State Police to collect evidence and process the scene,” the statement read. “Although there is no threat to the public, Interstate 91 will remain closed due to investigative activity.”

Vermont Governor Phil Scott The office said it was aware of the incident and that Vermont State Police were assisting federal authorities.

The agent's death came one day President Trump taking the oath of office. Trump promised to make border security among his top priorities.
