Ex-Autodesk Execs Snag $ 46m to form the next architectural design gen

Talk to many architects, and they'll probably tell you that Autodesk software, along with AutoCAD and Revit, needs to need their work over the decades.

But despite their extensive use, former Co-Co-Co and Chief Product Officer said Amar Hanspal that the architectural, engineering, and construction industry (AEC) uses tools in the 20th century to Design buildings of the 21st century. His latest start, Motif -The company Hanspal described as a “next-generation design platform for buildings” —is setting to change that. The $ 46 million help of that effort has now been raised.

Hanspal will come to the heel problem of a long career that is in the AEC technology space. He spent almost 20 years in Autodesk, and then in 2018 he established bright machines, a manufacturing automation company (which itself raised Signficant funds). Six years later, Hanspal left small machines and looked for his next actions.

His exploration in the AEC industry has revealed significant failure to architects with existing software, which is largely not clouded and can take up to 45 minutes to process even simple editing.

In 2023, Hanspal cooperated with Brian Matthews, a former CTO product in Autodesk, to work on the motif.

The first motif product was not ready until the first half of this year but Hanspal gave a rough picture of what it was. He said the motif was working on developing a platform that would offer a set of cloud-dressed 3D design tools assisted by the computer that would have elements of machine and AI study.

The $ 46 million of the startup is now a combination of seed and series. The series A was led by the Capital G, Alphabet's Growth Fund, while Redpoint Ventures led the seed to the seed.

Capital G's partner Jill Chase told Techcrunch that he researched the software for architects before meeting the motif. He noticed that it was a massive market with outdated products.

He wonders why existing tools are still not disturbed and finds that putting 3D architectural models in the clouds are very technical.

In addition to the complexity of engineering, the sale of these tools can be difficult, Chase said. “You need to have some elements of trust and relationships with large architectural companies for them to let you even at the door.”

When he met Henspal and Matthews, he immediately learned that their combined 40 -year experience in the AEC software industry would help them create a company that could take in incumbents.

As for why it has long released the first product, Henspal compares the motif effort to design the company's figma, which is on Stealth Mode for three years Before release anything.

“It's a huge and ambitious adventure that we know will take great effort to pull,” Hanspal said.

The motif is not united in an effort to disrupt AEC software. Other startups in the sector are included Snaptrude and Arcol.

But surely Hanspal whose motif has the best chance of winning this market.

“It really requires a very special team that is willing to make the effort,” he said. “I think that's us.”
