BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – If the Indiana men's basketball team is to repair the damage from Saturday's 85-60 loss to Iowa, it will need more effort from its veteran players when No. 19 Illinois visits Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Tuesday at 7 p.m. do.
Four upperclassmen – Oumar Ballo, Trey Galloway, Luke Goode and Anthony Leal – played at least 20 minutes against the Hawkeyes.
Among them, Valo and Leal recorded double-digit efficiency scores (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks – missed shots and turnovers).
Leal wasn't seriously hurt in the Iowa game. He did what he usually did. He played hard and defended, but didn't have much of an impact on offense.
The remaining veterans contributed to Indiana's demise. Ballo had 10 points and 13 rebounds, but his early turnovers set the tone for the rest of the game and he attempted only seven shots.
Galloway and Goode both played important roles. Galloway had his worst game as a Hoosier. There were no scores, four turnovers and four fouls. He was forcing the problem offensively and his defense wasn't good enough. In advanced statistics, Galloway's defensive rating was 129.6. This is the number of points his player scores over 100 or more possessions.
Goode was essentially brought to Indiana to provide a 3-point threat for the Hoosiers. Goode went 1 of 4 from distance against Iowa. This continued a pattern that was repeated over and over again, with Goode reflecting on the team itself.
Indiana has a lot of problems to fix, but older players should take the lead in fixing them. They cannot be part of the problem.
