James Gunn Fixes DC Casting Mistake

At the moment, comic book fans are somewhat divided on whether the DC Universe (DCU) will succeed. Some believe it could rival the original Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in popularity, but others worry it will repeat most (if not all) of the mistakes that sunk the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). However, some recent casting news gives us great hope that this upcoming cinematic universe will at least be more accurate to the comics. Now, James Gunn has greenlit Jason Momoa to play Lobo Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowit effectively fixed the DCEU's biggest casting mistake.

Momoa Is Not The Real Aquaman

Momoa, if we're being honest, was always the weirdest part of the DCEU. Actors like Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot, for example, always looked perfectly cast, as their on-screen appearances (more or less) mirrored the comic portrayals of their characters. Aquamanalthough he's always been a domineering and domineering king in the comics, the DCEU has turned him into a mostly mindless party dude who exists only to crack beers and shout bad one-liners. James Gunn probably wants a more comic book-accurate cinematic universe, and Jason Momoa is perfect casting for Lobo, because honestly, his King of Atlantis already behaved too much like this comic book. an alien warrior

However, if you just look at box office returns, moviegoers loved Momoa's performance as Aquaman (at least initially). James Wan's first Aquaman the film grossed over a billion dollars at the box office, making it the most successful film in the DCEU. However, Aquaman and the lost kingdom grossed a relatively paltry $439.4 million, a sharp drop that reflects everyone's collective superhero fatigue and perhaps a collective disdain for Momoa's one-note performance as the title character.

Lobo and Momoa Together

So why are we so sure that James Gunn made the right decision to cast Jason Momoa as Lobo, especially when we remember the failures of the DCEU? As mentioned earlier, she has been auditioning for the role for many years now. The Aquaman we saw fighting alongside the Justice League or fighting to save Atlantis bore almost no resemblance to the comic book character as he came across as a direct-to-video action star with “cool” dialogue. a five-year-old child. This kind of dialogue is more suited to Lobo, a character known for his extreme antics and bad attitude.

As James Gunn knows, Jason Momoa also has the perfect build for Lobo, a character whose ripped body is constantly on display (which happens when he wears a vest and skips the shirt). However, the Aquaman actor's performance in terms of attitude is far more important than his physique, as this is a character whose violent, devil-fearing outlook is the polar opposite of Superman's moral Boy Scout. We still don't know how Milly Alcock will play Supergirlbut it looks like if Momoa gives Lobo some of his remaining passion in the DCEU, he'll make the perfect nemesis (and likely reluctant third-act ally).

Jason Momoa Dream Role

Ultimately, while this doesn't guarantee a great performance, it's great to see James Gunn cast Jason Momoa as Lobo, as the actor has discussed how he wanted to play the role for years. All great performances on screen start with an actor's passionate commitment to the project, and we know Momoa is eager to play the last charnia on screen. Combined with Gunn's own passion for this strange universe, the future looks incredibly bright. DC fans.

Before everyone takes out their tridents to throw at us, we'll end by admitting that Momoa has always been a great superhero performer, but he's been hampered (sorry to break it to you, fanboys) by extremely limited vision. directors like Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon. after the success of films like Guardians of the Galaxy and shows as Peacemakerit's clear that James Gunn is as passionate about comics as Jason Momoa is about Lobo. Considering we've been waiting decades to see the main man on screen in a live-action movie, we're more pumped for the DCU now than ever.
