New studies from Openai and MIT media lab have found that, in general, more time users spend talking to ChatGPT, the lonelier they feel. The connection is made as part of Two, yet-to-be-peer-review studiesOne is done with Openai study "More than 40 million chatgpt contact" and targeted user surveys, and another in the MIT media lab following the use of participants' chatgpt for four weeks.
Mit's study identified some ways talking to chatgpt – by text or voice – can affect one's emotional experience, beyond the general search of higher use that leads to "High sadness and reduced socialization." For example, participants who have trusted chatbot and tend to get emotionally attached to human relationships feel united and more emotionally dependent on chatgpt during the study. Those effects are less severe in chatgpt voice mode, though, especially if the chatgpt has spoken in a neutral tone. Discussing personal topics tends to lead to short-term, and interesting, chatgpt talking about more general topics is more likely to increase emotional dependence.
The big search from Openai study is that having an emotional conversation with chatgpt is still not uncommon. "Emotional contacts are present in a large percentage of use for just a small group of heavy advanced voice mode users we study," Openai writes. That suggests that even though MIT findings are about they are not surprising, they are not exactly widespread outside of a small group of power users.
There are important limits to the MIT Media Lab and Openai's research, such as the same study covering a short time (one month for MIT, 28 days for Openai) and MIT has no availability of a control group to compare. Studies add more evidence to something that seems to be intuitively true today -talking to AI has a psychological impact on people who make a conversation.
