Here's what Martin Luther King III had to say during Donald Trump's inauguration
On Sunday, January 19 NBC News published an exclusive 31-minute interview with King III. About two minutes into the interview, King III was asked to say what he believed his father would think about the current state of the country.
“So I, as my son, can only speculate,” said King III. “None of us will ever really know [but] I can say… we've seen a lot of chaos. Some are constructive. Some are destructive. I think my father would always help with how we build a constructive relationship, how we build a lovely community?
King III explained that his father would be “quite disappointed” that the country is where it is. However, he does not believe that his father will be “surprised”. In addition, the son of the civil rights leader explained that when tragedy strikes a nation, individuals come together. After it's over, everyone “goes back to their corners.” However, he wants unity and community to continue beyond the tragedy.
Per NBC New YorkElsewhere in the interview, King III was asked to share what he will be looking for during Trump's inauguration.
“He said he wanted to create some [sense] unity,” King III said, referring to Trump. “Now that means you have to be in dialogue with everybody. If you really want to bring the nation together, let it be a manifestation of what we call ourselves… we do not represent the “United States of America” at this time…”

Martin Luther King's daughter Bernice King also spoke at Donald Trump's inauguration.
On Monday, January 19 NBC News Bernice published an exclusive video interview with King. During the conversation, he talked about Trump's inauguration on Martin Luther King Day.
“It's nice that it's happening on a Royal holiday, at the inauguration, because it reminds us of the King,” he said. “That brings us back to the King. It says: 'When we go forward, we must do so in the spirit of the King.'”
In addition, King had a few words of advice for those who feel “defeated” by Trump's return to office.
“We have to build a strategy. We missed the strategy. We Dr. We missed King's spirit,” he explained. “The spirit of Dr. King is violence. And violence is not just a posture, but a mindset. For us, we define it as a love-centered way of thinking, speaking, acting, and engaging that leads to personal, cultural, and societal transformation.”
