This was reported by a source close to Sussex The Times said the couple found the allegations made against them “painful” in Vanity Fair's February cover story.

Close friends of the couple also informed The Daily Beast Harry and Meghan are said to be disappointed by the accusations, especially given their current predicament: Harry is embroiled in a complicated court case in England, while Meghan's long-awaited Netflix project is delayed.

The Sussexes claimed the bombshell cover story “succeeded in making a bad time worse”.

A US publication's profile of the couple called “American Hustle” claimed Meghan could be “really, really terrible” if things don't go as expected.

According to several people who have worked with the couple since they left Britain five years ago, Meghan was initially described as “warm and charismatic” but became “cold and indifferent to whoever she thought was responsible” for the failures.

Working on Meghan's Archetypes podcast has also been described by others as “really, really terrifying” and “extremely painful”.

According to an insider, “Because he's always playing checkers, I won't even say chess, he just knows very well where everyone is on their board. And when you're not, you're going to be thrown at the monsters. Any minute.”

While Meghan seems to have taken the brunt of the criticism, Vanity Fair also painted a less flattering picture of Prince Harry, describing him as having a tendency to suggest well-intentioned but “crazy” ideas.

One such concept is said to be a “sociopath podcast” in which controversial figures such as Russian President Vladimir Putin will be interviewed.

The magazine also quoted Harry as reflecting on his personal struggles: “I had a really bad childhood trauma. Obviously. My mum was basically murdered. What doesn't make me one of the bad guys?”

A source also described Meghan as a nurturing figure who made Harry's life “so easy” while acting as a “facilitator” to support his wishes.

“I can imagine him meeting Meghan and taking a deep breath like, 'I'm so tired and you make it so easy,'” a source said.

“I don't want to be like Oedipus, but it kind of educates him,” they said.

The pair were referred to by Montecito residents as the “Local Villains”.

Former Archewell president Mandana Dayani spoke to the news agency about the Sussexes' generous and supportive nature as she reflected on her time with the couple. He stressed that Meghan and Harry's acts of “kindness, mentorship and support” usually take place “quietly behind closed doors”.

Josh Kettler, Harry's former chief of staff, who left after just three months last August, shared similar sentiments. He said he was “warmly welcomed” by the couple and praised their dedication and hard work.

Recently, said producer Jane Marie, who has collaborated with the Sussexes on Archewell audio projects. Vanity Fair Meghan is “just a lovely, genuine person”.
