Meta has been reported to test in-house chips for AI training

Meta has been reported to be testing an in-house chip for training AI systems, a portion of a approach to reduce hopes for hardware makers such as Nvidia.

According to ReutersMeta's chip, designed to handle AI workloads, is made in collaboration with the Taiwan -based firm TSMC. The company piloted a “small expansion” of the chip and plan to measure production if the test was successful.

Meta has deployed custom AI chips before, but only to run models – not train them. As Reuters notes, some of the company's chip design efforts have been canceled or otherwise have been scaled back after failing to meet internal expectations.

Meta expects to spend $ 65 billion for capital spending this year, most of which will go to the Nvidia GPUs. If the company manages to reduce even a small portion of that cost by moving to in-house chips, it would be a huge win for giant social media.
