New Samsung refrigerators with artificial intelligence will enable direct ordering of food


Samsung brings grocery shopping options to its AI-powered refrigerators.

US customers will be able to restock their groceries “directly from the screens” of their Samsung Bespoke refrigerators thanks to an upcoming feature that combines Samsung's “proprietary food recognition technology” with Instacart's application programming interface (API). companies said Thursday.

The feature, which emerged from a newly announced “multi-year” partnership between Samsung and the online grocer, will launch on Samsung's Bespoke 2025 refrigerators “with different types of screens” and its “AI Vision Inside” technology.

According to Samsung, it will be available on older Samsung AI Family Hub+ refrigerators, assuming they have food recognition technology this year as well.

The company said eligible existing models will receive the feature via an over-the-air update. The schedule for this is still being worked out.

“The combination of Samsung's core technology and the excellent online grocery shopping platform Instacart will be a great example of how the partnership can create a new level of convenience,” Samsung Electronics CEO Jeong Seung Moon said in a statement.

Samsung also described the Instacart partnership as “the latest step forward in Samsung's journey to add value to the user experience through collaboration with other forward-thinking technology leaders.”

Its “AI Vision Inside” already helps owners track food in their fridge. According to the company, it relies on cameras and deep learning models to do this.

Technology can identify up to over three dozen foods, while “names and expiration dates of unrecognized foods need to be set manually,” according to Samsung.

Upcoming features will expand “AI Vision inside” by “allowing refills via Instacart, right from the fridge,” it said.

When the feature launches, owners of Samsung Bespoke refrigerators in the U.S. will need to have a Samsung and Instacart account, as well as Wi-Fi to use it, according to a company press release. They will also need to live in an area where Instacart operates.

The company said the 32-inch AI Family Hub+ and the soon-to-be-launched 9-inch AI Home will be among the bespoke models debuting in 2025. function.

A Bespoke refrigerator with a 9-inch AI-powered home screen is expected to be unveiled at CES 2025 alongside a range of other high-end Samsung home appliances. Samsung previously described the Bespoke 9-inch AI Home refrigerator as a device that “satisfies consumers looking for advanced Family Hub features in a more compact size.”

CES 2025 will run from January 7th to January 10th.
