legendary Pinewood Preparation The basketball coach set a new South Carolina record with his 945th career win Tuesday night.
“I’m very blessed that God has put me in the right position for so long,” Eidson told the Post and Courier. “There were a lot of great kids here who understood the dedication it takes to win. Thank you so much.”
The record was set with a 67-31 win over Palmetto Christian. Eidson extended his record to 946 wins the next night when the Panthers beat First Baptist 69-43.
The older record is held by John Smith, who coached at Great Falls from 1969 to 2016.
Eidson is in his 34th season at Pinewood Prep and has won eight South Carolina Independent School Association state championships, including five straight from 2006-2010.
In 45 years of coaching, Eidson won 11 state championships.
It was a family deal for Eidson as well. His son, Chuck Eidson, was a standout player for the Panthers before playing four years in college at South Carolina. Chuck Eidson played professional basketball overseas for 11 years.
Eidson also coached two of his grandsons, Tre Arena and Tripp Eidson, on the same team for one season. Arena graduated last year. Tripp Eidson is a 6-foot-8 sophomore center.
The current Panthers team is 14-5, with all of their losses coming to South Carolina High School League teams.
Eidson remains committed to coaching until at least the end of Tripp's high school career. With this, he can get closer to 1,000 career wins.
Eidson coached two Parade All-Americans, his son and Jalen Slawson. Chuck Eidson was the first Gamecock to record a triple-double. Slawson did the same at Furman.
Swanson was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft and appeared in 12 games in the 2023-24 season. He currently plays for the Osceola Magic of the NBA G League.
The Pinewood Prep gym is named for Eidson.
