In one of his last Tag -warming before real life and responsibility to seize, Natalia (Dolores Oliverio) Sundance Choosing The Virgin of Quarry Lake.
Based on a couple of short stories by Mariana Enriquez, Laura Casabé's film draws on its non -fall setting – it took place Argentina Circa 2001, a time of political and economic disturbance – as well as Real-world risks spark through Nati's churning emotions. It produces a provocative but nuanced picture of a girl learning to embrace her highest, strong anger, for better and worse.
Without a family except for her sharp grandmother (Luisa Melas), Nati spent the summer days with her best friend, brothers Josefina (Isabel Bracamonte) and Mariela (Candela Flores ); When he is not with them, he chats with them online from the local cafe on the internet – an early indicator that The Virgin of Quarry Lake was set nearly 25 years ago. Other signs include Nati's fashions (her plastic “tattoo” choker's necklace is the perfection of retro, as well as her low-jeans) and the increasing sense of excitement entering the world around him. We hear snatches of Bad-News reports from background TVs and worried neighbors, then we see urgent collapse, including a lack of water and frequent power reduction.
More symbolic, at the start of the movie an unnoticed, futile man pushed his shopping cart in the middle of Nati's street, then stumbled away after being beaten by an offensive passer-by-but not before make uncomfortable long-term contact with him. Although before that another character said this loud something And other stunning things, lingers will not be claimed for a few weeks.
Another mystical element enters the narrative early on when Nati nodded to Rita about the annoying existence of Silvia (Fernanda Echevarría), almost 10 years older than Nati and her friends, and that worldly Cool caught the attention of a single male member of the group, Diego (Agustín sodium). Rita's solution is to write Silvia's name on a piece of paper and put it in a jar, delivering what maybe a bad spell. We did not immediately see any effects from it, but Nati's anger grew louder as Diego began to blew her to spend time with Silvia. Rarely there is a jealousy on a strobe-lit dance floor that felt more malevolently powerful than we see here.
While the audience never gets a sense of what makes Diego happy – we learn almost nothing about him, and his main appeal seems to be “around him” – maybe the point, as The Virgin of Quarry Lake are more interested in exploring the voluntary inner life of teenage girls. Oliverio's naturalistic performance brings a character pinballs between puffed-up confidence and extremely low self-esteem, and should navigate the growth in an unstable environment in which men (and some Women, also should not be trusted.
To dig too deeply to what makes The Virgin of Quarry Lake-In named for the isolated hole that friends visit on Tag -Day -a movie genre is to break the surprising surreal interference. But those who are terrible, both very real and incredible, are what will help us to find his way to catharsis.
The Virgin of Quarry Lake Played at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. It has no release date yet.
